Auto Repair Shop Startup — Lift Placement, Wastewater Treatment and Floor Plan Guide Korea
By Hiramise Team
For an auto repair shop startup, lift foundation work and wastewater treatment facilities are the floor plan fundamentals. Operating legally requires registration under Korea's Automobile Management Act.
Lift Placement Principles
A two-post lift requires precise vehicle entry and exit path and column placement on the floor plan. Lift foundations need concrete pouring and must be decided at the construction stage.
- Two-post lift column spacing: 2,800–3,200mm (vehicle width plus side clearance)
- Front and rear vehicle clearance: 500mm front, 1,000mm or more rear
- Aisle between lifts: 900mm or more for safe technician movement
- In-ground pit lifts: require underground civil work and are unsuitable for leased spaces
Mandatory Wastewater Treatment Facilities
Waste oil, coolant, and wash water from auto repair shops must be treated before discharge under the Water Quality and Ecosystem Conservation Act.
- Oil-water separator: mandatory on all drainage lines; size based on vehicle throughput
- Waste oil storage drums: oil containment bund required; covered storage recommended
- Carwash wastewater: recirculation system or direct sewer connection — verify with local authority
- Wastewater treatment plan: consult the Ministry of Environment before finalizing design
Floor Plan Requirements for Business Registration
- Workshop floor area: must meet minimum under Automobile Management Act Enforcement Rules
- Zone separation: repair area plus parts storage plus customer waiting room
- Fire safety: foam or dry powder extinguishers required in petroleum handling areas
- Ventilation: exhaust fume and welding fume extraction systems mandatory
Auto repair shops are outside the current Hiramise MVP category set. Use the general floor plan tool to design lift placement and wastewater routing. An auto repair category is planned for a future release.
